4-5 December, 2013. Baku, Azerbaijan.
Introduction
On 4-5 December 2013 heads of national agricultural research systems (NARS), scientists from Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC) and ICARDA's management and staff convened in Baku, Azerbaijan, for a Regional Coordination Meeting. The two-day event brought together some 40 experts and scientists to discuss the results of collaborative activities in recent years, identify new priorities and make recommendations for cooperation in the future.
A number of issues emerged from the discussions. Most prominent were ensuring sustainability of project outcomes, increasing water productivity and introducing water-efficient technologies, capacity building and developing mountain agriculture and tourism in the region.
In particular participants called for more action to ensure that project results are sustainable and do not fade out. They agreed that successes should be replicated across the region. Water productivity was also high on the agenda. Participants voiced concern over recurrent water shortages and urged introducing more water-efficient technologies in the region and breeding crops resistant to drought and heat. They also noted the need for more capacity-building efforts in the region as knowledge is still not shared effectively. Lastly, some scientists pointed to lack of focus on mountain agriculture and tourism, which are overlooked and remain largely unused.
The meeting identified three key areas needing more attention in the future. These are crop improvement and plant genetic resources; livestock production and rangelands; and natural resources management. Participants agreed on the need for better ways of disseminating successful technologies and enhancing regional collaboration, and set out new priorities for collaborative work, and capacity development and training.
